parade day!

everybody loves a parade! especially when they're throwing macadamia nuts and leis! this was the Merrie Monarch parade, capping off a week of hula competitions. King Kalakaua is the monarch they're referring to, and he was responsible for reviving the art of hula after the missionaries had a cow about it and pushed it underground for being too lascivious. now they have modern hula and ancient hula divisions. i need to learn a lot more about them to begin to appreciate the movements and especially the mele, or chants.

anyway. it was a damn fine parade, with an elvis impersonator, a middle-school ukulele band, all the princesses from all the islands, horses in leis, and a brass band whaling "When The Saints Go Marching In" with such Nawlins-like gusto that it brought tears to my eyes. i took 157 pictures so it was kinda hard to pick which ones to show y'all, but i think these'll do.

the durian seems not to be ripe yet. it's hard to tell, though. he might be rotten for all i know. but he doesn't stink, so from everything i've read i'm pretty sure he's not ripe.

that's all for now. happy weekend to everybody!
